Issue #6/2021 of our magazine Landskab is out / The new custodians of the planet

In his initial invitation to the participants in the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, curator Hashim Sarkis asked for contributions and visions of spaces where we can live together. Live together as human beings who, despite increasing individuality, yearn to connect with one another and with other species. Live together as new households looking for more diverse spaces for inhabitation and in emerging communities that demand equity, inclusion, and spatial identity. Live together across political borders to imagine new geographies of association. Live together as a planet facing crises that are so colossal that they require global action for all of us to continue living at all…

Architects have a special professional capacity to act as conveners of different actors and experts in an effort to muster a joint response to the challenges of our time. Our role is to be ‘custodians’ of the new spatial contract that is needed to change our current practices: we cannot continue to live as if alone on a passive planet of endless resources…

By getting together in a field of landscape architects, structural architects, planners, artists and scientists, we can develop new spatial setting and ways of living…One does not leave the Venice biennale despondent, as one might expect, given the severity of the agenda, but filled with an insistent flood of inner images that, after a few days’ reflection, give rise to an optimistic belief that we still have time – that we can join together and that we will be heard…

We yearn to be connected, and we have finally realized that we have no other choice.
